Question : -

What is nl^x method ? Explain ?

Answer : -

nl^x method

It is the short hand notation which consists of principal quantum number (n) , letter denoting the orbital (l) and number of electrons in the orbital (n) written as superscript is called the nl^x method.

For eg : let's consider Hydrogen

Hydrogen

Atomic no. (z) = 1

Electronic configuration = 1 (in terms of K, L, M, N )

Now,

let's write this in nl^x method.

For this we need 3 parameters !

  • Principal Quantum number (n)
  • letter of the orbital (l)
  • No. of electrons in the orbital (x)

So,

For Hydrogen the outermost orbit is K-shell.

K shell's value is 1 i.e. n = 1

(n denotes the orbital number, size and energy)

l = n - 1

l = 1 - 1

l = 0

If l = 0, then the orbital is s-orbital.

So, l = s

(For extra information :

l = 0 ---> s-orbital

l = 1 ----> p-orbital

l = 2 ----> d-orbital

l = 3 ----> f-orbital )

since, atomic no. = 1

No. of electrons = 1

As, Hydrogen has only one orbit i.e. " K " .

K has only 1 orbital i.e. s-orbital

Hence,

No. of electrons in the orbital (n) = 1

The nl^x representation of H atom is 1s¹

For your information :-

K shell - 1 orbital (s)

L shell - 2 orbitals (s, p)

M shell - 3 orbitals (s, p, d)

N shell - 4 orbitals (s, p, d, f)
