A natural resource is anything that people can use which comes from nature. People do not make natural resources, but gather them from the earth. Examples of natural resources are air, water, wood, oil, wind energy, iron, and coal.
Natural Resources- Advantages and Disadvantages
Solar power- advantages
It is indefinitely renewable, requires little maintenance, can be used to generate electricity, it can be used to heat water. The skylights in homes can reduce energy expenses.
Solar power- disadvantages
The energy can not be created at night and the power generated is reduced during times of cloud cover.
Hydroelectricity- advantages
It does not "use" water, all of the water is returned to its origin. It is a clean source of energy. They do not create any waste by products.
Hydroelectricity- disadvantages
They are expensive to build. The creation of a dam can create flooding of land. It can cause problems for water access and make it difficult for control of water flow to neighboring countries.
Wind power- advantages
It is a clean energy source. The turbines can be placed in a wide variety of locations in water and on land. The turbines only take up small plots of land. Power companies pay turbine owners for electricity fed back into the grid.
Wind power- disadvantages
not always generated. They fall mercy to local wind patterns. They are very loud.
Biofuel - advantages
renewable energy source created from plants that can be regrown each year. They do not require many changes in cars and other places of use to be utilized. Reduce the dependence on foreign oils.
Biofuel- disadvantages
The machinery required to farm the plants creates carbon emissions. The main disadvantage is the land set aside for crops means less land for food production.
Natural gas- advantages
It can be created through breakdown of matter in landfills. It can be efficiently and safely stored. Environmentally friendly due to low emissions after burning. The most notable fact is that most of the natural reserves of this product are under utilized.
Natural gas - Disadvantages
It creates greenhouse gas emission. In sense of large scale use, landfills would not be able to meet the demand. It is highly volatile and can be dangerous if handled or transported carelessly. Because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, leak detection is very difficult.
Nuclear power- advantages
It is a useful and powerful source of easing dependence on fossils fuels. They do not produce no greenhouse emissions and the cost is very low. It reduces the dependence on foreign oil and natural gas.
Nuclear power- disadvantages
Any land many miles surrounding the plant would be uninhabitable for several decades should it blow up. It also requires machinery to mine and transport which means it would produce some greenhouse gases. The plants are very expensive to build. It takes a long time to degrade.
