Nephron is the basic functional unit of a kidney. A kidney has thousands of these packed close together.

Each such individual unit selectively reabsorbs water, purifies blood, all according to the amount of water there is in the body and amount of dissolved waste there is to be excreted.

These contain Glomerulus, Bowman's Capsule and collecting ducts.
