The Nervous tissue consists of neutron cells.

✧ Function :

These cells are specialised to transmit the stimuli received from external or internal agents to different body parts and brain.

✧ Location :

The Nervous tissue occurs in brain, spinal cord and sense organs.

The neuron or nerve cell is the longest cell known and is made of three parts :

  • Cyton (the cell body) : The cell body contains nucleus of the nerve cell. Neurofibrils which are responsible used for transmission of impulses from one neuron to another, occur here.

  • Dendrites : These are small branched projections growing out of the cyton. their main function is to transmit the impulse to the cell body. Large dendrites are called dendrons.

  • Axon : Axon is a long and uniformly thick cylindrical process growing out of a cell body. Its main function is to transmit nerve impulse away from the cell body. Fine branches are seen at the terminal end of the axon.
