Nervous tissue, also called neural tissue or nerve tissue, is the main tissue component of the nervous system. The nervous system regulates and controls bodily functions and activity and consists of two parts: the central nervous system (CNS) comprising the brainand spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) comprising the branching peripheral nerves. It is composed of neurons, or nerve cells, which receive and transmit impulses, and neuroglia, also known as glial cells or glia, which assist the propagation of the nerve impulse as well as provide nutrientsto the neurons.

Nervous tissue is one of four major classes of tissues and makes up the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. ... Nervous tissue contains two categories of cells — neurons and neuroglia. Neurons are highly specialized nerve cells that generate and conduct nerve impulses. The Functions of Nervous System

Animals interact with their environment. So, it's only logical that in order to take advantage of any benefits and avoid possible dangers, they need a way to be able to monitor their environment and then respond in an appropriate manner. In a nutshell, this is the job of the nervous system and it can be broken down into three main functions.

First, the nervous system collects sensory input from the body and external environment. Second, the nervous system then processes and interprets the sensory input. And finally, the third main function of the nervous system is to respond appropriately to the sensory input.
