Each protons contributes a +1 charge, therefore the atomic number of an element is equivocal to a nucleus' charge. Nucleus contains nucleons (protons and neutrons). as u may know neutrons are neutral whereas protons are positively charged. So , the net charge on the nucleus will be positive.
