The reaction between an acid and a base which results in the formation of a salt and water is called a neutralization reaction.

Acid + Base → Salt + Water

An acid contributes its anion in an acid base reaction to form a salt.

The proton or the hydrogen ion from the acid and the hydroxyl anion from the base combine to form the water.

This is called a neutralization reaction because the pH of the solution after the reaction and formation of salt and water is 7. The solution becomes neutral in nature.

Neutralization reactions are very common and take place in our day to day lives.

In chemistry, neutralization or neutralisation (see spelling differences) is a chemical reaction in which acid and a base react quantitatively with each other. In a reaction in water, neutralization results in there being no excess of hydrogen or hydroxide ions present in the solution.
