An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Q. What is Newton's first law (of motion) ?
Answers :
It states that an object will continue to remain in its state of rest or in a uniform motion along a straight line or path unless an external force acts on it.
This means all the objects resist in changing their state. The state of any object can be changed by applying external forces only.
(i) A person standing in a bus falls backward when the bus is started moving suddenly.
This happens because the person and the bus are in rest while the bus is not moving as bus starts moving, the legs of the person starts moving along with bus, but rest portion of the person start moving along with bus, but rest portion of his body has tendency to remain in rest. Because of this, person falls backward if he is not alert.
(ii) A person standing in a moving bus falls forward, if driver applies brakes suddenly.
