Newton's first law of motion states that every object tends to be in it's state of motion, either stationary or moving until or unless an external force acts on it.

Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist the change in it's state of motion.

Thus, we can see that in both cases the change in state of motion is resisted, therefore, Newton's first law of motion is also known as law of inertia.

Hi,

Here is your answer,

                                        NEWTON'S FIRST LAW

Q.1 What is Newton's first law ?

Answer:- This law states that everybody continues in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless it is compelled by some external force to change that state.

The state of rest or uniform linear motion both imply zero acceleration. The first law of motion can therefore be simply expressed as

If the net external force on a body is zero, its acceleration is zero. Acceleration can be non-zero, only if there is a net external force on the body.

Q.2 (Second part of the question) Why it is known as law of inertia?

Answer: 2 According to Newton's law of motion, everybody continues in its state of rest or uniform motion unless an external force acts upon it. It depicts that a body by itself cannot change its state if rest or of uniform motion along a straight line.

Thus, 1st law defines law of inertia.

Hope it helps you !
