The planter or farmer produced an indigo crop in their land is called nij cultivation.

EXPLANATION:

Nij cultivation is predominantly in tropical climate countries such as India, Southeast Asia, Africa and so on. Indigo had a very high demand in the European market because it used as cloth dye in the 17th and 18th centuries.

So peasants in British ruling areas are forced to produce the indigo plantation. It is a plantation crop but our peasants did in a small piece of land and the British levied a high tax on Indigo so this type of cultivation deprived the peasants. After the invention of synthetic dyes, the demand for indigo falls.
