1.nitrification

ammonium salts in the soil is converted first into nitrates by nitrosomonas bacteria and then into nitrates by nitrobacter bacteria. these bacteria are called nitrifying bacteria. the nitrates so formed in the soil can once again be absorbed by the plants.

so the conversion of ammonia into nitrates is called nitrification.

2.ammonification

when the plants die the proteins present in them are converted into ammonium compounds by putrefying bacteria and fungi found in the soil. we can define the process of ammonification as the conversion of complex organic compounds like proteins into ammonia

thanx guys

nitrification :

the biological oxidation of ammonia or ammonium to nitrite followed by the oxidation of the nitrite to nitrate is called nitrification.

Ammonification :

the process by which organic nitrogen compound present in living organisms are converted into inorganic ammonia (NH3)

or ammonium ions (NH⁴+) is called ammonification.
