Nitrogen-fixing bacteria, microorganisms capable of transforming atmospheric nitrogen into fixed nitrogen (inorganic compounds usable by plants). More than 90 percent of all nitrogen fixation is effected by these organisms, which thus play an important role in the nitrogen cycle.

There are some bacteria which are very useful to plants. One of these are the nitrogen fixing bacteria . They are also called biological nitrogen fixers . They are able to fix the nitrogen from the atmosphere in a form which helps the plants to use it . The plants cannot use the nitrogen directly from the atmosphere so these bacterias are very helpful for them . Examples are rhizobium and cyanobacteria .
