Nitrogen fixation is a process in which rhizobium bacterium which lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants
As plants cannot absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere though nitrogen is in abundant quantity
So they have a symbiotic relationship i.e. the plants and the rhizobium bacterium
The plant give Rhizobium bacteria in the shelter and in return the Rhizobium bacterium will convert the atmospheric nitrogen into ammonium compounds which the plants can use easily
