the process if converting the atmospheric nitrogen to nitrogen compounds is known as nitrogen fixation...there are 2 ways of fixing it...

1.biological nitrogen fixation :in this the bacteria called rhizobium present in the roots of leguminous plants fixes the atmospheric nitrogen to nitrogen compounds.

2.Atmospheric nitrogen fixation:in this the lightning causes high temperatures which results in a reaction between nitrogen and oxygen present in air to produce oxides of nitrogen is dissolved in rainwater forming dilute nitric acid this nitric acid reacts with the alkalis of the soil like limestone to turn into nitrates ...

hopes this help you mate☺

During lightning, gaseous nitrogen changes to oxidation of nitrogen. These oxides of nitrogen come to the soil along other rains. The oxides of nitrogen are changed into property form in soil by rhizobium bacteria. This process that converts nitrogen oxides into organic substances is called nitrogen fixation.
