Plants need nitrogen in fixed form but it is really hard to get it in its fixed form.
Nitrogen is always present in free state and it is not possible for plants to take nitrogen from the air directly. organic compounds of nitrogen is needed by the plants. It is the process in which atmospheric nitrogen is converted into organic compounds by some microorganisms like ribozzium and abiotic factor like lightning. In this nitrogen is converted into an organic compound- ammonia.
These microorganisms are prokaryotic organisms ( organisms having single cell). They are found in the soil near roots of the plants.
