nitrogen is present in the air in gaseous form. plants need nitrogen in the nitrogenous compounds. so when the air nitogen is converted into nitogeneous compounds it is called nitrogen fixation.

nitogen can be fixed by lightning and by some microorganisms namely blue green algae and rhizobium
