Plants can't take up nitrogen directly from the air. They need nitrogen in soluble form. Therefore blue green algae and some bacteria (such as Rhizobium) help in converting the atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogenous compounds which can be taken up by the plants easily. This process is known as nitrogen fixation.

Ways through which nitrogen gets fixed in nature:

☆ By lighting

☆ Rhizobium bacteria present in the root nodules of legumes.

☆ Blue green algae
