changing the nitrogen into nitrates that can be used by the plants is called nitrogen fixation.
Aout 78% of air around us is nitrogen, but plants does not use it directly.
Plants use nitrogen in the form of nitrates only.
The micro organism like Rhizobium, Nostoc helps in nirrogen fixation.

Nitrogen fixation is done by the nitrogen fixing bacteria in the soil on the plants. These bacteria convert atmosphere air into nitrogen. This nitrogen helps the plant in its metabolic activities (or day to day activities).
