The despotic British rule made Mahatma Gandhi to adopt Non-cooperation movement which means purely becoming swadeshi and using indigenous goods rather than buying the English goods. He went to the extent to instruct the common people to burn the English clothes and textiles.
By noncooperation Gandhiji meant a peaceful protest. This idea was initially denied by the famous congress leaders like Annie Besant and Motilal Nehru. Gandhiji even distributed the charkas which are the weaving wheel and he encouraged the common men to weave their own clothes.
This movement had a drastic impact on the nationalism of the people that they boycotted the English posts, articles, textiles and they took up producing indigenous goods.
