1.) the reaction between phenol and formaldehyde in presence of either acid or base catalyst to form Ortho and para hydroxy methyl phenol derivatives ,which cindenses to form compound having rings joined to each other through bondCH2 group ,the initial product could be a liner product called NOVALAC.

And after condensation of NOVALAC we get bakelite.
