NUCLEAR FISSION : is a nuclear re-action in which the nucleus of a heavy atom, such as uranium splits into two approximately equal parts with the release of a large amount of energy. The energy is released because the binding energy per nucleon for medium mass nuclei. The phenomenon of nuclear fission is used in nuclear reactors for the production of energy.

NUCLEAR FUSION : is a process in which light nuclei, such as hydrogen nuclei, fuse to form a heavier nucleus, with the release of a large amount of energy. The energy released per fusion reaction of this type, is approximately 24 MeV, whereas in a fission reaction involving uranium, about 200 MeV energy is released per reaction. Fusion reactions are responsible for energy production in the sun and other stars.
