Both fission and fusion are nuclear reactions that produce energy, but the applications are not the same. Fission is the splitting of a heavy, unstable nucleus into two lighter nuclei, and fusion is the process where two light nuclei combine together releasing vast amounts of energy.

Nuclear fission is the process in which a heavier nucleus is bombarded by lighter nuclei to give out resultant nuclei whose mass is a bit lesser than the the heavier nuclei . This difference is the energy obtained and is defined by E=Δmc²

Nuclear fusion is where 2 lighter nuclei fuse to form a larger nuclei.  Some left over is converted to energy.

Hope this helps
