Answer:-

Octane Number:- It is a scale by which quality of a fuel is determined of an internal engine. As standard in this two pure carbons are selected.

Explanation:-

Octane Number can be increased by:-

  1. Aromatization
  2. Cracking
  3. Isomerization

Some antiknocking agents are:-

  1. By addition of some gasoline compounds which is to be capable of reduce knocking.
  2. By using those fuels which have high octane number.

Some important points:-

  • Straight Chain Hydrocarbons like n-heptane knocks very badly that's why it has octane number 0.
  • There are some branched Hydrocarbons which have good antiknocking property like like Iso-octane and which will have very high octane number i.e. 100.
  • On increasing the length of the chain octane Number will decrease.
  • While on increasing branches octane number will increase.
  • The sequence for the octane number will be as Aromatic compound > cycloalkane > olefins > branched chain alkane > straight chain alkane.
