the outer most shell of an atom should have 8 electrons to be stable and they do this by bonding with other atoms . for example ,

H¹+ O^ -2+ H¹ = H2O .

here oxygen needs 2 electrons to achive octet rule and 2 hydrogen want to give away it's only electron .
