Answer:

The octet rule proclaims that every atom will try to complete its octet in order to achieve its noble gas configuration.

it's limitations..

  1. Incomplete octet.less than 8 electrons in centre atom ex Hcl
  2. expanded octet. more than 8 electrons in centre atom. ex PCl5
  3. Molecules having odd number of electrons. ex N02

Octet Rule:

  • The Octet Rule refers to a tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell. When Atoms have Fewer than Eight electrons, they tend to react and form more stable compounds.

_____________________

Significance:

  • The Octet Rule Successfully explains the formation of chemical bonds depending upon the nature of the element. It is used to determine stability in atoms.

Limitations:

  • It can not be applied on non-metals after silicon in periodic table.
  • These elements can expand their octet and have more than eight valence electrons around the central atom
  • Molecules with an odd number of electrons cannot satisfy this rule
