Oligosaccharides: Carbohydrates that yield two monosaccharide units, on hydrolysis, are called oligosaccharides. They are furcher classified as disaccharides; trisaccharides, tetrasaccharides, monosaccharides, they provicle on hydrolysis. Amongst these the most common are disaccharides. Answer: Oligosaccharide is a class of Monosaccharide

Explanation: Oligosaccharide is a class of monosaccharide. They are made up of 3 to 10 units of monosaccharide linked together by glycosidic bond to give desired structure. They can be di, tri, tetra etc depending upon the number of monosaccharide units. They have many functions in body like cell recognition and binding. Oligosaccharide chains linked to lipids or to amino acid side in proteins, by N- or O-glycosidic bonds and form glycolipids, glycoproteins etc.

Examples of Oligosaccharide are:

1. Sucrose(made of glucose and fructose linked by glycosidic bond)

2.Maltose( made of two glucose units linked by glycosidic bond)

3. Lactose (made of glucose and galactose linked by glycosidic bond)
