The one purpose of the personification in the above excerpt is:
it makes death seem friendly and familiar.
The poem "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" is about the journey of the poet towards death. She tells about the appearance of the death and her journey towards her grave. She personifies death and eternity and tells about her journey towards the grave. She refers to the three stages of life, childhood, fertility, and procreation with the images of school children, fields and grazing grain. While moving towards her grave the carriage passes from these three scenes which signify the moving of the life which will end at the grave.
