Optical density is a characteristic property of any transparent object just like the resistivity of a wire is.
Its a measure that tells us how much a light ray bends when it travels through a refractive medium.

So the more the optical density is the more the refractive index right?
Well yes! An optically denser medium has a greater refractive index when compared to an optically rarer medium.
