What is OPV? why is it important to give OPV to children under 5 years of age?

OPV is the WHO-recommended vaccine for the global eradication of polio. Each child requires just two drops per dose to be immunized against polio. Usually administered four times if the EPI schedule is followed, OPV is safe and effective in providing protection against the paralyzing poliovirus

OPV helps in preventing Polio in Infants and children.

OPV is given to Children under 5 years of age because it is the age during which Children are likely to be get infected by Polio.This happens because in the young age the immunity system of the children is not developed to an extent that it will protect them from these diseases.That is why Children are under age of 5 years are given OPV.
