Order of reaction is a number that relates the rate of a chemical reaction with the concentrations of the reacting substances - the sum of all the exponents of the terms expressing concentrations of the molecules or atoms determining the rate of the reaction 

When the reaction rate depends on the second power of the concentration of the single reactant. This type can be seen when the two molecule of the same reactant react in a single elementary reaction.


For example 

R + R →→ product 
2R →→ product


The rate of the reaction is given by

d[R]dtd[R]dt = k[R][R] = k[R]2

Where k is the rate constant, second order reaction. Thus, when the concentration of the reactant is reduced to half, the rate of the reaction decreases by 4 times. When the concentration of the reactant is tripled, the rate of the reaction increases by 9 times.
