The Organismal Theory. The counter argument to the cell theory developed during the later part of the C19th. Reichert a morphologist: Argued that an organism has a structured plan. Strasberger a cytologist: Cells are connected in an organism sometimes by cytoplasmic bridges (plant cell plasmodesmata).

     POSTULATES

The generally accepted parts of modern cell theory include: All known living things are made up of one or more cells. All living cells arise from pre-existing cells by division. The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms.Cell theory was originally given by German botanist Matthias Schleiden & German physiologist Theodor Schwann together based on their researches in 1838 & 1839 respectively. This theory proposed the hypothesis that all living bodies are composed of 1 or many cells.

The organismal theory states that all the organism including multicellular organism is the basic unit of life.

Explanation:

Organismal theory was explained by several scientists such as Reichert a morphologist stated that an organism have structured plan; Strasberger a cytologist argues that cells in an organism are connected by cytoplasmic bridges, and Sherrington and Pavlov (neurophysiologists) says cells communicate with each other and co-ordinate with their actions.

Several postulates of organismal theory are as following:

  1. Some organisms such as fungi  are non-cellular and are unable to divide into cellular compartments. plant cells have cytoplasmic bridges between each other called plasmodesmata.
  2. some of the cells lack some basic components such as red blood cells and nucleus. Cytoplasm in unicellular organisms does not undergo subdivision into cells.
  3. If any cell is removed from the multicellular organisms, it would require complete life support to be alive.
  4. Homeostatic control or co-ordinatoin between unicellular or multicellular organism is must to maintain the whole organism.
