Oscillatory motion is one in which the body repeats its movements with a fixed time period. The movement of the body passes to and from from one extreme position to the mean position to the other extreme position and then retraces the path back to the first extreme position.

The repeated back and forth movement about the rest position is called oscillatory motion. When a body moves along a straight line, it is said to be linear or rectilinear motion.
