Question :–

What is Osmosis ?

Answer :–

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from the region of high water concentration to the region of low water concentration through a selective permeable membrane is called Osmosis.

Example :–

Osmosis occurs when the sugar solution & water are separated by the semipermeable membrane. The sugar solution's large molecules can't pass through the membrane (semipermeable) into the water. The small molecules can easily passes through the membrane (semipermeable) until it's equilibrium condition.

\maltese\:It it is defined as movement of solvent molecules from the region of lower concentration to higher concentration through semi permeable membrane until and equilibrium condition.

\maltese\:It is only applicable for solvent molecules.

\maltese\:For the first time osmosis was explained by Abbe Nollet (1748).

\maltese\:Osmosis is of two types basically :-

  • Exosmosis
  • Endosmosis

\maltese\:Endosmosis is formed when it is placed in hypotonic solution resulting into swelling of cell take place.

\maltese\:In exosmosis shrinkage due to hypertonic solution when it was placed.

\maltese\:Osmosis regulates number of process in plants like opening and closing of stomata is controlled by \pink{\sf K^{+}} ions.

\maltese\:Osmosis depends on pressure gradient and concentration gradient.
