Osmosis is the spontaneous net movement or diffusion of solvent molecules through a selectively permeable membrane from a region of high water potential to a region of low water potential, in the direction that tends to equalize the solute concentrations on the two sides.

Osmosis is a vital process in biological systems, as biological membranes are semipermeable

Types of Osmosis

Osmosis is of two types:

Endo-osmosis– When a substance is placed in a hypotonic solution, the solvent molecules move inside the cell and the cell becomes turgid or undergoes de-plasmolysis. This is known as endo-osmosis.

Exo-osmosis– When a substance is placed in a hypertonic solution, the solvent molecules move outside the cell and the cell becomes flaccid or undergoes plasmolysis. This is known as exo-osmosis.
