Osmosis is the process of transportation of water and minerals from its higher concentration to its lower concentration.

Hi!

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration (down the concentration gradient) across a partially permeable membrane.

If there is no membrane involved, and/or does not involve water molecules, then it is diffusion, not osmosis.

Osmosis is important in plants for taking up water from the soil through root hair cells on their roots. Water in plant cells keep the cell turgid by causing the vacuole to swell.

In animal cells it prevents dehydration of the cytoplasm, so that it does not undergo plasmolysis ie it does not move away from the cell membrane.
