osmosis is the process by which molecules of a solvent move from a reason of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a semipermeable membrane

Osmosis is a special case. Here, water molecules move from higher concentration to lower concentration. It is different from diffusion as water can move on both sides through selectively permeable and semipermeable membranes. It helps to maintain the turgidity of the cell. As water moves through the membrane some substances that are allowed to move through the membrane are carried by water. So it helps in exchange of some substances.
