Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) is a marine renewable energy technology that harnesses the solar energy absorbed by the oceans to generate electric power. ... OTEC uses the ocean's warm surface water with a temperature of around 25°C (77°F) to vaporize a working fluid, which has a low-boiling point, such as ammonia

Answer :-

OTEC means Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion.

The principle of working of OTEC bases, is as follows :-

The water at the surface of the ocean is warmer than the water at deeper depths.

This temperature difference is used by Ocean Thermal Energy conversion conversion (OTEC) systems to generate electricity.

Working of OTEC :-

  • In OTEC plants, the energy of the warm water at the surface of the ocean is used to convert liquid Ammonia (has a very low boiling point) into gaseous state.

  • The vapour of ammonia at high pressure is used to spin the turbines of the generators which convert the thermal energy of the ocean into electricity.

  • The used ammonia vapour passes through a condenser where cold water which is found from the deepest part of the ocean, condenses the Ammonia vapour back into its liquid form.

  • This process is repeated again and again to get continuous production of electricity.

Note :-

The temperature difference between the warmer water at the surface of the ocean and the cold water at the depths upto 2 kilometres should be 293 Kelvin (20 degree Celsius) or more.
