Standard Meridian of India

The standard meridian of India is the 82.5º east longitude which passes through Allahabad. This is five and a half hours ahead of 0º meridian (Greenwich).

The fun fact is, that the 82.5º east meridian wasn’t chosen to be the Indian Standard Time till 1905 ,and came into force only in the year 1906.

Also did you know there was a separate Calcutta time which was officially maintained as a separate time zone till 1948!

It had to be somewhere so whoever proposed the system first was going to put it at their house. There was an International Meridian Conference in 1884 which decided on Greenwich Observatory in UK as the 0.

It wouldn’t have mattered where it was since the bearings, expressed in Longitude, would always have been relative to some Zero Point.

hope it helps.....
