⭕️In a reaction if a substance GAINS OXYGEN or LOSES HYDROGEN it is said to undergo "oxidation"
⭕️This is called a reducing agent or also called as a reductant.
⭕️now on the other hand if substance GAINS HYDROGEN and LOSES OXYGEN it is said to undergo "reduction"
⭕️this is called an oxidising agent or also called as an oxident.
✔️✔️✔️In the reaction given in the attachment :-
⭕️CuO LOSES Oxygen and gets REDUCED..
✴️ So we can say that it is an "OXIDIZING" agent because it OXIDIZES hydrogen.
⭕️Hydrogen GAINS OXYGEN and thus it undergoes OXIDATION..
✴️hence it is an REDUCING agent because it REDUCES CuO!!!

Answer:
(i) Oxidising agent: A substance which
increases the oxidation number of an element.in a given substance and itself undergoes a decrease in oxidation number of a constituent element is called an oxidising agent.
(ii) Reducing agent: A substance which decreases the oxidation number of an element in a given substance and itself undergoes an increase in the oxidation number of a constituent element in it is called a reducing agent
