Answer:

Oxidation number :

Oxidation number is charge in which atom appears to have , when all other atoms are removed from its ions .

For example :

O.N. of Na is + 1 .

O.N.  of Mg is + 2 .

There is two method to find oxidation number or state .

1 . By letting x .

2 . By structure of the compound .

For example :

O.N.  of  Cr₂O₇²⁻ ions .

Let O.N.  of Cr be x

We know O.N.  of O is - 2 in most of the case but not in special one like peroxide or super oxide .

2 x - 2 × 7 = - 2

2 x = - 2 + 14

2 x = + 12

x = + 6.

Thus O.N. of Cr₂O₇²⁻ is + 6 .
