We know that the common Oxidation state of oxygen is (-2). But, in peroxide bonds the oxygen atoms combine with each other resulting in oxidation of both the atoms and thus, increasing each others oxidation state by (1) i.e. upto (-1).
By formula:-
Oxidation state of Hydrogen:- (1)
[Since, When Hydrogen gets attached with a non metal it's oxidation state is taken as (+1)]
Oxidation state of Oxygen:- x
Then,
2(1) + 2x = 0
2 + 2x = 0
2x = -2
