Oxidation number in simpler words means valency with charge.
The actual definition of oxidation number is: a number assigned to an element in chemical combination which represents the number of electrons lost or gained, by an atom of that element in the compound.

If the atom has gained electron (-) is used e.g : N-3,O-2 etc.
If the atom has lost electron (+) is used e.g : Mg+2,Na+1 etc
Oxidation number is useful in stating redox reactions since reduction means gain of electron and oxidation means loss of electrons. Keeping this in mind one can tell if the reaction is oxidised or reduced

There is a question that I had asked related to it where one has to find out where reduction and oxidation is taking place..
