A reaction in which Oxygen or any electronegative atom is added to a compound or Hydrogen or any electropositive atom is removed from a compound, is called an oxidation reaction.

eg- C + O2 ----> CO2

Oxidation can be both exothermic as well as endothermic. If the reactants are highly reactive the reaction is exothermic(spontaneous)

eg.- C + O2 ----> CO2

If the reactants are less reactive like nitrogen then the reaction is endothermic.

eg- N2 + O2 -----> 2NO

oxidation means reducing hydrogen or adding oxygen. example c +0=co2.
