Carbon compound oxidises by gaining oxygen and losing hydrogen.

C2H5OH + [O]---KmNO4--> CH3COOH.

Here ethanol undergoes oxidation reaction , gains one oxygen and loses 2 hydrogen to form ethanoic acid.
