In first compound the oxidation no. of Cu is +2 and in second compound the oxidation no. of Cu is -2/3
But according to me second compound have some mistake!
Does second compound have Co3 or CO3?? I used Co3.

Explanation:

Charge number present on an atom is known as oxidation number of the atom. When charge is positive then it means the element or atom has lost electrons.

When charge is negative then it means the element or atom has gained electrons.

For example, in the compound Cu_{2}S, let the oxidation state of copper is x and it is known that sulfur has an oxidation state of -2.

Therefore, calculate the oxidation state of copper as follows.

            2x - 2 = 0   (as the compound is neutral so, the net charge is 0)

          x = \frac{2}{2}

             = +1

Thus, we can conclude that the oxidation state of copper in Cu_{2}S is +1.
