Ozone layer contains all the gases(nitrogen, oxygen, argon,CO2 etc) present in the air but the concentration of ozone( a gas) is more in this layer which helps us by absorbing the harmful UV rays of the sunlight.More details follow.
In the atmosphere, some oxygen(O2) molecules absorbed energy from the sun's ultra-violet rays and split to form single oxygen atoms. These atoms combined with the remaining oxygen(O2) to form ozone(O3) which are very effective in absorbing UV rays.
Ozone(about 90 percent of it ) exists in the stratosphere, in a layer between 10 to 50 Km above the surface of the earth. But the maximum concentration of ozone lies between 20 to 25 Km which is called ozone layer. This layer is sometimes called ozonosphere and plays an important part in the radiative balance of the atmosphere by absorbing UV rays.
