A palindromic sequence is a sequencemade up of nucleic acids within double helix of DNA and/or RNA that is the same when read from 5' to 3' on one strand and 5' to 3' on the other, complementary, strand. It is also known as a palindrome or an inverted-reverse sequence.

If we mark a sequence in DNA say

 5' GAATTC 3'

 3'CTTAAG 5'

which is the recognition site of EcoR1 restriction endonuclease enzyme, is a palindromic sequence. If you read the strands one at a time from 5' to 3' i.e. keeping the reading frame same, you would see that it reads the same.

A palindrome from the english words is 'MALAYALAM'.
