Palisade cells are plant cells located in leaves, right below the epidermis and cuticle. They are vertically elongated, a different shape from the spongy mesophyll cells beneath them in the leaf. Their chloroplasts absorb a major portion of the light energy used by the leaf.

The palisade parenchyma is a tissue present in the leaves. The chloroplasts are present in palisade parenchyma. They help in trapping of sunlight for the photosynthesis process. They are divided into upper palisade parenchyma and lower spongy parenchyma. As more number of chloroplasts are present in the upper palisade parenchyma the upper surface of the leaf is more shiny than the lower surface
