What are parabola?

This comes from “para” meaning “like” or “similar to” and “bola” meaning a throw. So a parabola is the path followed by a stone when thrown in a uniform gravitational field in a vacuum.

It is a curve with one axis of symmetry. If it were a mirror, light rays parallel to the axis would be reflected through a common point called the focus.

The curve can be obtained by cutting a cone with a plane parallel to one of its generators.
