penicillin is the product of a mould (fungus) and not of bacterium.it is the first produced antibiotic. in 1929 Alexander Fleming observed that some bacteria growing in a culture were destroyed by an accidental contamination of a mould Penicillium notatum. he discovered that this would produce the substance to suppress the growth of many bacteria and the substances name penicillin the first antibiotic for medical use.
